Tips for Improving Gas Mileage

Gas prices have reached an all-time high which has increased fuel costs significantly. You can reduce your fuel costs to a certain extent by making your car run more miles per gallon. Here are some tips that can help improve gas mileage.

Use the Recommended Fuel Type

Many people follow the advertisements and use higher octane ratings recommended by F1 racers and reputed motorists. The truth is that higher octane rated fuel might not be suitable for regular cars and many engines are not capable of handling higher octane ratings. The result is a lot of fuel goes wasted that reduces your gas mileage. Hence, you should always follow the car manufacturer recommendation about the specific fuel type and octane ratings.

Maintain Recommended Tire Pressure

Low air pressure in tires increases rolling resistance which increases fuel consumption. Even if tires are underinflated by eight pounds, the rolling resistance of tires increases by 5%. In simple words, every 1 psi drop of air pressure in tires lowers the gas mileage by 0.2%. You can improve the gas mileage of your car by a minimum of 0.6% to 3% by maintaining recommended air pressure in all tires. It is very difficult to notice low air pressure in tires by a single glance at them. Hence, you need to check air pressure at least once in a month and maintain the recommended pressure in all tires to improve gas mileage.

Remove Roof Racks

Loading weight on the top increases air resistance and the car’s engine is required to burn more fuel to overcome the resistance to move forward. If you want additional luggage space you can install removable roof racks that can be installed and removed easily.

Take Out Trash from the Trunk

Your car’s trunk should not be treated as a trash holder and you should make it a point to remove unnecessary stuff from the trunk to reduce the load. You need to understand that your car’s engine is required to burn more fuel to carry excess weight around. So, remove the sports equipment that you usually need on weekends and load them in the car only when you are going to indulge in those sports activities.

Use the Recommended Motor Oil

Many people have a misunderstanding that any motor oil is perfect for their engine which is not true. Motor oils are different in terms of viscosity and weight. If you use heavier oil than recommended, it will increase friction in the engine components that will increase the fuel consumption. Check the car’s manual to know the recommended motor oil and stick to the car manufacturer recommendations.

Coast at Red Signals and Stop Signs

Coasting means driving your vehicle at a steady speed and removing your foot from the accelerator when you see stop signs or red signals ahead. Remember, accelerating your car when approaching a yellow signal won’t help you get past the red signal. You will be required to apply brakes and stop at the red signal which is nothing but a wastage of fuel. According to auto experts, when you see stop signs remove your feet off the accelerator pedal and let the vehicle decelerate naturally and come to a halt. This would help you conserve more fuel.
